They just don’t come much geekier than that, people. The additive manufacturing wizards at Ultimaker decided that one way to maker their 3D printers stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace was to make them more portable.
The design of the Ultimaker backpack is really clever. It’s not an actual pack per se. Instead, it’s a carrying kit that can be fastened onto the original packing foam they shipped around a printer. A pair of supporting plates screw into place with screws and you simply thread the backpack straps onto the plates. Cinch up the nylon strap that originally held the foam together and you’re ready to roll.
This customized carrier isn’t for just any old 3D printer. It’s made specifically for Ultimaker’s highly-portable Ultimaker 2 Go. Who needs a 3D printer they can cart around on their back?
Well, people who run 3D printing classes like the crew of 3DPrinterOS will certainly appreciate this. They do onsite training sessions for kids and adults to introduce them to the magic of 3D printing. Having a nice, compact unit and a custom-fitted backpack to carry it in makes moving from the office to the classroom a whole lot easier.
That’s one possibility, but there are plenty of others. You could, for example, schlep it over to your local airport and set up shop printing out TSA master keys for distraught travelers who’re locked out of their luggage.
