A man has been arrested and fined €600 ($671) after confusing a plane door with a toilet door during a flight from Edinburgh to Amsterdam.
James Gray has been given a five-year ban from flying with the airline KLM after attempting to open the plane door mid-flight, according to the Telegraph.
As soon as the flight landed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Gray was placed in a detention centre overnight before receiving his fine. He didn't realise he was also banned from the airline until he attempted to fly back home and staff refused to let him get on the plane.
"The crew told me to stay in my seat and I was to be arrested when the plane landed," Gray said. "I tried to explain it was a simple mistake. It was a misunderstanding. The police came and arrested me. They weren't too friendly. They weren't too friendly."
Gray was forced to borrow money from a friend in order to pay for a flight back home with a different airline.
"I was charged and fined €600," he said. "I only had €750 with me so I had to borrow money for the rest of the stay over there."
When asked about the alleged door opening, Gray said he wouldn't open a plane door on purpose and claims he only touched the handle.
"I realise the danger of that sort of thing," he said.
