From double rainbows to a giant festival of lights to cat cafés, life in Sydney, Australia seems pretty great. Apparently, it's great enough to give Sydney the best reputation of any city in the world.

Sydney is the world's most reputable city for 2015

Because of the city's safety, high quality of life, effective government and attractive environment, the Reputation Institute has named Sydney the "most reputable city in the world" for 2015.

The Reputation Institute surveyed 19,000 people from G8 countries — France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, Canada and Russia — on 100 well-known cities around the world. Their responses were used to gauge the politics, environment, friendliness of citizens, economy and safety of each city.

Cities with better reputations are more likely to gain foreign investments, visitors and job seekers, Fernando Prado, the managing parter at the Reputation Institute, told Mashable. For every point a city gains in its reputation, he said, there will be a .04% increase in arrivals the next year.

Of the top 20 most reputable cities, 15 were European. But many Asian cities are quickly ascending the list, with cities like Seoul, Karachi and Mumbai seeing the highest reputation growth in 2015.

The first American city to make an appearance on the reputable list is San Francisco, at number 24, even though New York ranked in the top 10 cities according to other metrics like economy, appealing environment and effective administration.

"New York is a very interesting case because it should be much higher," Prado said. "Its economy is number two out of all the cities; it's number six for environment. It should be in the top 10, but it is not. From people abroad, we have noticed that admiration and trust is much lower. We call this a negative emotional halo."

New York has one of the worst emotional halos in the world, following Las Vegas, Moscow and Tel Aviv. Of all the American cities included in the survey, only New Orleans had a positive emotional halo.
