Cosmopolitan- Katie Snooks vlogged her bare skin for one month to show her experience with Roaccutane.
If you have ever struggled with spots or acne you will know just how crap it can make you feel. One blogger has bravely shared her acne struggles with the world and vlogged her bare skin every single day for one month.
Katie Snooks has suffered from acne for 10 years and after trying multiple antibiotics, skin care products and diet changes decided to try Roaccutane.
Roaccutane is an oral treatment prescribed to treat severe acne. As Dr Jane Leonard, GP and aesthetic doctor explains; "It's derivative of vitamin A and part of the same family as retinol, and it can only be prescribed by specialist dermatologists. It's used in severe cases of acne when first and second line treatments including topical retinoids, topical and oral antibiotics, and things like the contraceptive pill have been unsuccessful."
Katie explained that she wanted to film her face every day whilst using Roaccutane to see how her skin changed over the month, dispel any horror stories people may have heard about the treatment and help other people struggling with acne. Putting your bare face on the Internet for everyone to judge is a scary thing (trust us!) so huge props to Katie for baring all to the world.
As the days progress Katie shares not only how skin looks, but feels. After one week on Roaccutane she said her skin still felt very soft and she wasn't suffering with any dryness but was prepared for the ineveitable break outs.
Roaccutane is a very aggressive drug that reduces oil production. This is why Dr Leonard advises it can cause other problems with your skin such as "cracked lips, dermatitis, very dry skin, scaly skin, itching, a red rash and delicate, fragile skin."
By day 18 a visibly upset Katie explains that she didn't feel like filming because "my skin hasn't been this bad in a really long time". As part of the treatment, Roaccutane will cause your skin to breakout, something Katie was aware of; "I knew it was going to break out, but I didn't think it could get any worse than it had been getting." But Roaccutane does have a proven track record for helping acne as Dr Leonard told us "It has an approximately 80% success rate when given for 4-5 months."
Roaccutane does come with some serious side effects though, so its important you make an appointment with your GP who can discuss these with you and refer you to a dermatologist.
In a world full of Snapchat filters it's so refreshing to see someone share such a personal and relatable journey.
