"Losing weight is a goal held by millions around the world. However, this is also one of the most broken resolutions because it requires a time commitment and personal effort. While spending hours in the gym, out on the track or in front of exercise videos will certainly get results, there are several effective and simple weight loss exercises that can be done right in front of the TV, even in smaller spaces like apartments.
You can fit these exercises in during commercials or throughout your favorite show. They get the heart rate going and can help you lose weight.
- Focus On Big Muscles & Multiple Movements:
One common theme you’ll see with all these exercises is that they rely on optimizing some of the biggest muscles in the body and using multiple movements to engage more muscles. Bigger muscles burn more calories and create more blood flow when they are engaged compared to smaller muscles, and working out just one doesn’t do nearly as much for burning the fat off as engaging several at a time.
- Exercise #1: Air Squats:
The key here is only doing these if your legs are in relatively good shape. If you know you have bad knees and bad hips, you need to skip this one and consider leg raises from the floor. However, if you don’t have any specific leg pains, there are few exercises that shape the legs and posterior like squats, and they burn a surprising amount of calories too.
For a beginner’s version, use the side of your couch for squats. Make sure to only set your butt on the edge of the couch, to emphasize form.
- Exercise #2: Tricep Dips:
Tricep dips are fantastic for toning the back of your arms. For this exercise, position yourself just off a couch, chair, or other piece of sturdy furniture with your hands on both sides of your hips. Keep your legs together and your hands on the furniture. Then, lower your arms until they are at a ninety degree angle and push back up. These work to really tone the arms and are a perfect complement to push ups.
- Exercise #3: Rotate Push Up Styles:
Push ups are great because they work out the arms, the back, the shoulders, and the core. If you can’t do full push ups, do them from the knees. When you’re a bit stronger, put your feet up on the couch and focus on keeping proper form to really strengthen your core muscles. Spread your arms out further to focus more on the back and shoulders. Bring them closer together to engage some triceps, as well.
- Bonus: Consider a Desk Cycle:
When it comes to exercises you can do in front of the television, one potential option is to get a desk cycle for your couch. Put your feet on the pedals, and keep up a solid pace while sitting on the edge of a couch or chair. If you can’t keep a faster pace, even at a relaxed pace you will start stacking up the calories burned.
When it comes to practicing exercises you can do in front of the television to actually see some weight loss results. It’s important to understand how good (or bad) a shape you are in so you can work at your level. Start slow and work up gradually to prevent injury while still seeing results.
Change things up regularly to keep your TV exercises interesting. Also, consider surrounding yourself with motivational quotes, sayings and phrases to help your energy level and determination up. You can do this by placing post in notes around your home, adding images on your walls of favorite celebrities or using vinyl wall art to decorate your space, adding inspirational images, words and phrases to your walls.
